School’s Science & Technology week wins national award

A week-long series of events and activities to celebrate National Science and Engineering Week, organised by St John’s School in Marlborough, has won the national award for the best secondary school event.

The award, judged by the British Science Association, was judged by a panel from the Association. Natalie Broadhust, regional programmes officer for the British Science Association explained how impressed the panel were, “(They) liked how you managed to involve the whole school and made science week cross curricular. The community day was also really great and it was this that made your school really stand out from the other finalists.”

Events across the week included a wide range of activities for students, and culminated in the special Saturday event on the theme of Transport: Past, Present & Future.

The event at St John’s was free to attend and over 1,300 people visited. The day was organised by staff at St John’s and was partly funded by the Marlborough Area Development Trust.

Visitors were able to take a close look at the UK solar car that recently raced across Australia.

Police cars and motorbikes were on display, as were several historic military vehicles, a steam car, hybrid cars from Fish Brothers in Swindon and a Manitou forklift from TH White.

Visitors were able to visit the inflatable planetarium to experience the world of space.
